WATER

TYPES OF WATER

Spring Water – Spring water is the subject of many popular misconceptions. Many of those misconceptions are promoted through less than accurate advertising pitches. For example, many people believe that spring water is actually “pure” water. On the contrary, spring waters contain many of the same impurities found in drilled wells or even tap water. In fact, since springs feed our rivers, there’s lots of spring water right in your own tap water! On average, the purity of spring water is roughly comparable to that of tap water. Some have lower TDS levels and some are much higher.

But is spring water “100% pure” as many spring water companies advertise? As it turns out, the “100% pure” refers not to the absence of impurities in the water, but to the source of the water itself. That is, 100% of the water in the bottle came from an underground source (i.e. a spring), rather than from a surface water. These cleverly worded phrases may be legally permissible, but many people find them to be misleading, to say the least.  Even more frightening is the fact that most people actually believe them.

Another adjective which frequently pops up in spring water advertising is “natural”. While this term may conjure up images of a pristine wilderness setting, the fact is that “natural” can mean just about anything. This vague term could actually apply to our local tap water since the Potomac River is most certainly a “natural” source. It may be natural, but I don’t know many people who would go down to the river and scoop themselves a refreshing glass of “pure and natural” river water!

“Protected source” is yet another spring water sales claim that can be misinterpreted. When most people hear this term, they think about a remote mountain spring, far away from the pollution of civilization. The reality is more often a well-head surrounded by chain link fence. Hence, the “protected” source!

Spring water advertising is all about images – images of the mountains, streams and wildlife. What really happens to get that bottle of water to you is actually quite different from those images. Many, if not most, spring waters are not bottled at their source. Instead, the water is pumped into large tanker trucks for transportation to a bottling facility at a different location. (So remember, those “pristine” springs are being visited many times each day by large diesel tanker trucks – not exactly a “pristine” image.) Health regulations dictate that the water in those tanker trucks be either chlorinated or ozonated at all times to protect against bacterial contamination.

At this point, particularly if they are chlorinated, these spring waters are virtually indistinguishable from chlorinated tap waters. Once the tanker truck water reaches the bottling facility, a carbon filtration process is used to remove the chlorine. However, most of the other impurities remain. The “spring” water then has to go through more treatment – like micron filtration to take out floating particles and more ozonation before being put into the water bottles.

But the real question is why stop at just a few types of filtration? Why not remove all of the impurities? Who wants nitrates in their water? Who wants various metals in their drinking water? The answer is that if most people don’t know what’s in the water in the first place, perhaps they don’t care.

Finally, the biggest spring water companies in this country are all owned by huge, foreign-owned corporations.  Your money goes elsewhere.

Filtered Water – This is a type of water frequently found in grocery stores. Typically, the source of the water is municipal tap water. That water is then run through carbon filters to remove the chlorine (which makes it taste better) and sometimes through a micron filter before being ozonated and bottled. It’s basically tap water without the chlorine. It’s really not much different than many spring waters. It comes from a “natural” source, goes through minimal filtration, and is then bottled and shipped to market.

Purified Water – Purified water represents the fastest growing segment of the bottled water industry. Why? Because it’s purer than other types of waters. When it comes right down to it, why does anyone “buy” their water. Some buy out of convenience, but most buy because they want something that’s of a higher quality and purity than other options like tap water. Like other types of water, there are popular misconceptions about purified water as well. To meet the legal definition of “purified water”, water impurities must be removed or reduced to extremely low levels. Water which meets this definition is of higher purity than spring water, tap water or filtered water.

Purified water is often confused with filtered water. Many people believe the two terms to be synonymous, but this is not the case. While both types of water are subject to some sort of filtration (as is almost every spring water), purified water is cleansed and purified through additional purification processes, typically reverse osmosis, distillation or deionization. The resultant product, “purified” water, is of significantly higher purity than either spring water, tap water or filtered water.

Purified water may originate from either a spring or surface or groundwater source or directly from the tap. It simply doesn’t matter. Since, the purification process is designed to remove virtually all types of impurities, the quality of the source water has little bearing on the quality of the final product. Nevertheless, our source water meets the EPA minimum drinking water standards before any purification is even done!! A properly designed and functioning purification system will produce extremely high purity water every time, regardless of variations in the source water’s quality. This is not true of spring water, tap water or filtered water. For this reason, purified water is viewed as the objective benchmark against which the purity of other waters is judged.

If you’re buying water for higher quality and higher purity reasons, then purified water is your best choice.

Distilled Water – Distilled water is water that is created through the process of distillation.  Basically, in the process of distillation, the pure H2O is boiled out of its contaminants.  So, many of the contaminants found in water are inorganic minerals, metals etc.  Those types of contaminants have very high melting points and even higher boiling points.  Wayyyy higher than the boiling point of water at 212 Degrees F.   So, as the water (with its contaminants) is boiled, the pure water turns into steam and is captured and cooled and thus becomes distilled water.  The junk left behind is all of the contaminants.  Now, there’s one small problem with that.  There are many volatile organic compounds found in water – and many of them have boiling points below that of pure water.  So, when the water gets heated, the volatiles boil off first, then the pure water.  So, it’s very important to have additional purification technologies – besides distillation – to make sure all the bad stuff is removed.

Ozonated and/or UV Light
Many people are drinking ozonated water for 2 main reasons:
  1. They want water that is purified by the ozone process and because
  2. They believe ozonated water increases oxygenation and detoxification in the body.
A good quality ozone generator can produce water that is free of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and most synthetic chemicals.
It also contains significant levels of ozone bonded to the water.
What Is Ozonated Water?

For a little background on the potential benefits of drinking ozonated water, it helps to understand what ozone is.

Ozone is an unstable form of oxygen. The type of oxygen we breathe in every day is O2, which has 2 atoms of oxygen.

Ozone is O3, which means 3 atoms of oxygen are bound together.

It is well known in the natural health field as well as in science and medicine that oxygen deprivation at the cellular level leads to disease. Thus, one of the quickest ways to improve cellular health is to increase oxygenation.

Typically, increased cellular oxygenation is achieved primarily through a live food (i.e., raw, organic) diet, deep breathing, exercise, and by drinking enough clean water to be fully hydrated.

Ozone is considered “activated oxygen,” which has been used therapeutically in a number of ways, including by intravenous injection, blood transfusions, ozone showers, as well as ozonated drinking water.

Drinking this water is considered to be one of the simplest and least expensive ways to get ozone safely into the bloodstream.

3 Common Methods of Producing Ozone

Three of the most common methods of producing ozone include:

Ultraviolet light
Cold plasma and
Corona discharge (hot spark).
Ultraviolet and cold plasma are commonly used in therapeutic applications.

Ultraviolet is useful when you want to produce a slow, steady stream of ozone, while cold plasma can produce greater quantities within a shorter period of time.

Primo water is alway 99.99% pure ….you don’t have to worry about what’s in your water …
Better tasting than tap - Primo is consistently clean, pure, and tastes great, no contaminants or dissolved solids like fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, and no chlorine smell

Cleaner than filters - While the carbon filters in on-tap, pitcher and fridge filters remove odors and dissolved solids, these filters do not remove bacteria and other contaminates like Primo does. The effectiveness of temporary filters declines over time and they have to be replaced regularly. Many pitcher filters only use a two step filtration process and are not intended to purify water. With Primo, you know your water is purified, not just filtered.
Better than cas pack water - Primo’s great value “fill it  yourself” Refill option is more affordable and far more earth friendly compared to single serve water bottles. Reduce plastic waste in landfills and save big with Primo Refill for less than .40 per gallon. …

What quality standards does Primo water meet? -
Primo water is 99.99% pure and always free from chemicals and impurities. Every bottle is 100% safe and meets or exceeds all Federal, State and local requirements. Primo water has a clean, refreshing taste that is preferred by 3 to 4 people over the leading brands.

Where does Primo water come from? -
Primo originates from municipal sources.

How is Primo water purified? -
Primo uses a 9 Step state-of-the-art commercial purification process. We start by filtering water to remove harmful contaminants. We remove very small particles and microbiological constituents using micro-filtration. Next, the water enters either a reverse osmosis or distillation phase. After this phase, Primo Water's proprietary mixture of minerals is added to create its clean and refreshing taste. Then, the water is ozonated to ensure that it is completely disinfected, making the water 99.99% pure.

Download our Deer Park Quality Report for complete information about our natural spring water, including our 10-step Quality & Safety Process.

What is the shelf life of Deer Park® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water products?
All of our non-carbonated and carbonated (sparkling) regional spring water products have a "Best By" date in the second line of the manufacturing code, which you can find on your bottle [the code is etched into the plastic 1 inch above or below the label depending on the manufacturing location]. Look for the letters "BB"; the date to the right of those letters is the "Best By" date. The "Best By" date is not an expiration date but rather the date by which we recommend you consume the water to obtain the best taste.

Depending on the packaging type of the Deer Park® products you purchase, the "Best By" date is as follows: Sparkling 1.0L PET: 12 months from manufacturing date
Sparkling 0.5L PET: 9 months from manufacturing date
Still (non-carbonated): 18 months from manufacturing date

What is the best way to store my Deer Park® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water products?
We recommend consumers treat bottled water as they would any food product and store it at moderate temperatures and away from strong-smelling foods, detergents or cleansers and automotive supplies.

Are plastic bottles still safe if exposed to extreme temperatures?
You are probably asking about our PET plastic bottles. We can assure you that PET plastics are identified by the FDA as safe and suitable for use with foods and beverages. There is no scientific basis for misleading statements about PET leaching dioxin and causing maladies. These plastic containers are FDA-approved for storage of food and beverages. To learn more, see the International Bottled Water Association's position statement on Container Safety.

We recommend consumers treat bottled water as they would any food product and store it at moderate temperatures and away from strong-smelling cleansers and chemicals.

Where does your water come from?
Deer Park® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water comes only from carefully selected springs that meet our standards for good taste and reliable quality. We identify our spring water sources on all of our bottled water brand labels. In the case of three- and five-gallon products used in homes and offices, source information can be found on every cap.

Is bottled water regulated?
Yes, bottled water is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a food product. In accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, these regulations, by law, must be as stringent and protective of public health as the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) regulations for tap water.

In many cases, the standards for bottled water are stricter than those for municipal drinking water when it comes to several key contaminants, including coliform and lead. For example, tap water is allowed to have three times more lead than bottled water, and while up to 5% of water from municipal systems are permitted to be positive for total coliform, bottled water sources must be 100% free of coliform at all times.

How can I be assured of the water quality of Deer Park® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water?
Bottled water is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a food product. These regulations, by law, must be as strong and protective of public health as the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) regulations for tap water. Furthermore, in our plants, we test each bottling line more than 200 times every day; gallon for gallon, our water is tested over 60 times more frequently than most municipal water supplies.

How can I obtain a mineral analysis or your water quality report?
Since 2005, we have made detailed water quality reports publicly available for all of our bottled water brands. These reports are comparable to those published by public water utilities and are based on independent testing results from certified laboratories. All our labels include a toll-free phone number and website address to find these quality reports; three- and five- gallon products provide a toll-free phone number on every cap. Online reports allow us to convey information in a clear, thorough manner that a small label cannot.

View our latest quality report for Deer Park® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water here: www.deerparkwater.com.

Does Deer Park® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water contain fluoride?
Deer Park offers both fluoridated and non-fluoridated bottled waters to provide consumers with choice, quality and convenience. As required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates bottled water, our fluoridated bottled waters meet FDA standards and bottles are clearly labeled to say they contain fluoride to facilitate consumers' selection. If you are looking for a fluoride value, please look at our water quality reports which show information on the fluoride content by specific product.

Many U.S. communities have had access to fluoridated water in their public water supplies for more than 50 years. The American Dental Association supports the use of fluoride as effective in preventing and reversing the early signs of tooth decay. Similarly, the FDA has determined that drinking fluoridated water may reduce the risk of tooth decay.

We encourage parents and caregivers to consult their dentists or pediatricians for recommendations about how much fluoride their children should be getting as part of their overall diet.

Is it safe to drink from plastic bottles? Does your packaging contain BPA or bisphenol-A?
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and other international health organizations and regulatory agencies have approved plastic as a safe food packaging material. At Deer Park, we continually evaluate packaging materials to ensure they are safe for our customers. We abide by all FDA regulations.

All currently available scientific evidence indicates that the packaging used for bottled water is safe when stored sensibly as any other food product would be stored– at moderate temperatures and away from strong-smelling cleansers and chemicals – and the product is consumed by its "Best By" date.

Furthermore, BPA is not present in our bottled water packaging smaller than three gallons. Our single-serve bottles (typically 1.5 liters and smaller) are made from PET plastic (marked with the "1" symbol), which is clear and lightweight. Our three-liter, one-gallon and 2.5-gallon sizes are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), identified by the "2" symbol. Some of our three- and five-gallon bottles used with coolers are made from polycarbonate, a strong, clear and reusable type of plastic. Our tests show that BPA is non-detectable in the water inside our polycarbonate bottles 30 days after bottling and sealing at the very low detection level of 1 ppb. We are more than halfway through transitioning from Polycarbonate to BPA-free PET bottles and expect the transition to be complete by 2013.

Learn more about plastic safety (on deer park site)

Are your bottles recyclable?
Yes, every bottle produced by Deer Park® is recyclable. Our single serve and 3-liter bottles are made of #1 PET, which is polyethylene terephthalate—one of the most recyclable plastics there is. Our 1-gallon and 2.5-gallon plastic containers are made of #2 HDPE which is high-density polyethylene and fully recyclable. Our Deer Park® Eco-Sense® 3- and 5-gallon polycarbonate and PET bottles are used, returned to us, washed, sanitized and re-filled more than 20 times, saving plastic resources. We then recycle the bottles at the end of their usefulness. For information about how and where to recycle in your community, please visit www.earth911.com.
Some of your Deer Park® bottles are labeled rPET, what does that mean?
Seeing "rPET" on our labels means the bottle contains some percent of recycled plastic. PET signifies polyethylene terephthalate, a type of plastic frequently used to make food and beverage containers, and rPET is short for recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Because making rPET bottles requires less energy than making bottles from all-new materials, we constantly seek ways to capture and reuse beverage containers and incorporate more rPET into our packaging. In fact, in 2008, we set a lofty goal to advance the recycling rate for PET beverage bottles in the U.S. from what was then 30% to 60% by 2018. Learn more about our commitment to recycling here.
